Advance Ability
Speech After Dental Work

Dear Ruth,

I recently had bridgework completed and have been having problems with my speech. Do you have any recommendations? Are there any exercises that would help me?

S.S.

Dear S.S.,

As you may already have found out, you can rapidly adjust to the different proportions in your mouth. There are elegant feedback mechanisms involved that I believe are probably intended to keep you from severely injuring yourself by biting in the wrong place. Survival depends upon the ability to continue eating.

If you feel you need to help yourself adjust, you might try speaking very slowly and distinctly as rehearsal, and listening to the resulting speech very carefully. Play with it until it sounds to your liking. If problems persist, consult the dentist who fitted the bridgework to make sure that it is properly fitted; and if need be, remember that speech/language pathologists are available to help you polish your speech.

Best Wishes,
Ruth Alice Jurey, M.S., C.C.C.
