Advance Ability
Need Evaluation?

Dear Ruth,

I worked with a speech/language pathologist in seventh grade, and now at age 20, I am working with her again. We are working on vocabulary, oral and written expression, and reading comprehension.

I do not know what an adjective or verb is. Should I tell her this? When we worked on opposites, I made many errors. I have trouble coming up with ideas, but need to be given choices.

I have not had a speech/language evaluation. Should one be done to determine exactly where the problem is, if any?

A.J.

Dear A.J.,

I’m glad you found someone to help you with these areas. Do tell your SLP about anything you think you might need to know, and talk it over with her.
My guess is that your SLP is probably evaluating your needs as you go along, as you work together. Talk with her about a formal speech/language evaluation, if you like. She will be able to explain her recommendations and the reasons for them.

Best Wishes,
