Hands-Free Computing

Dear Ruth,

We have a brother who lives in Texas who is a quadriplegic. We are looking for information on a computer system that can fit his needs. He is 44 years old and has been quad for a year. We believe that if we can acquire a computer system for him he may have a reason to exist.

Dear C.R.,

Computers offer possibilities for physically disabled individuals as never before. Using as little as a single switch operated by eye-blink, head or other movement, users can access the computer without touching a keyboard or mouse. Voice-activated interfaces are improving, too.

For example, a user may 'scan' menus or items on the screen by pressing a switch, and select them by pressing again. On-screen keyboards can replace the regular kind, and word-prediction software can offer intelligent choices about what word the user is typing, saving time. Add other set-ups to take the place of the mouse.

Apple has led the way in computer applications for the disabled, and in the reliability required by the disabled user. Find information at http://www.apple.com/accessibility. Many companies make specialized switches and programs.

A good match between the disabled user and the computer set-up can make the difference between the success and failure of the system for that user. Aside from the daunting number of interface and program choices, these systems are not necessarily quick or easy to customize and to learn to use. It is vital to get knowledgeable help in selecting and implementing the best solutions to meet individual needs. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Consumer Line, 800/638-8255, can refer you to service providers in your area who offer augmentative communication. Check with individual providers to locate the computer help you are looking for.

Best Wishes,
