Reading Help for New Worker

Dear Ruth,

My husband has recently hired a worker. He likes this man, but the new worker cannot read. The company is willing to pay for instruction. Do you have any idea where I might look for a course to teach him to read?

P.M.

Dear P.M.,

The best course for your worker depends upon the reason he has not learned to read up until now. If he simply needs to be taught, you might ask at the local library or community college. They may have literacy programs, or know of nearby programs to help you. If these options are too slow-moving, you might find an experienced elementary teacher or professional tutor to work with him. A one-on-one course with a professional will probably be quickest and most effective.

On the other hand, your worker may have some stumbling blocks which have interfered with his learning to read. More than anything else, reading depends upon language--the auditory skills required for phonics, the ability to name things rapidly and accurately, and other language skills. A speech/language pathologist is the professional who is qualified by training and experience to assess and treat language deficits, to strengthen the foundations of reading.

Best Wishes,
